Each school that receives Title I, Part A funding must work together with parents to create a School-Parent Compact, which is a written agreement explaining how the school, parents, and students will share the responsibility for supporting student learning and helping every child succeed. As part of the school’s Parent and Family Engagement Plan, the compact outlines what the school will do to support learning, what parents can do at home, how students will take responsibility for their own learning, and how families and the school will partner to help children meet the state’s academic standards. The goal of the compact is to ensure that everyone understands their role in helping students achieve their best.

Commitment From Our School

Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s challenging State academic standards.

The Academy at Smith will provide a high-quality curriculum and effective instruction in a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment. Our Compact will be shared with parents at our Title I Night on August 26, 2026. Through rigorous coursework, highly qualified teachers, targeted interventions, technology integration, and strong partnerships with families and the community, the school is committed to supporting the academic success of every student. Additionally, the school will promote continuous communication with parents and families via email, Guilford Parent Link weekly Sunday calls.

Hold parent-teacher conferences (at least annually in elementary schools) during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement.

The Academy at Smith will hold parent-teacher conferences and family engagement meetings to discuss this Compact and each student’s individual academic achievement, progress, and educational needs. Conferences will be available upon request with teachers. Teachers will also reach out on a regular basis during planning periods and on teacher workdays. Contact will be documented via the GCS Parent / Teacher contact log online. The Academy at Smith will also have curriculum nights once per semester for parents to come in and visit with teachers and the Principal.

Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress.

The Academy at Smith will provide parents and families with progress reports, report cards, parent conferences, phone calls, emails, student information systems, and other forms of regular communication. School staff will work to ensure parents are informed about student achievement, attendance, behavior, and opportunities for academic improvement so that families can actively support their child’s educational success. Parents are encouraged to download the Infinite Campus Parent Portal in order to stay abreast of student achievement, attendance, etc. Parents will be provided information on how to be an Observer for their students' Canvas pages.

Provide parents with reasonable access to staff.

The Academy at Smith will provide parents and families with reasonable access to school staff through scheduled conferences, phone calls, emails, virtual meetings, and school events. Staff members will make every effort to communicate in a timely and respectful manner to address parent questions, concerns, and suggestions regarding their child’s academic progress and overall school experience. The school values strong family-school partnerships and encourages ongoing communication to support student achievement and success. Teacher's e-mail addresses will be posted on the school's website under faculty. The principal will host monthly breakfast events to provide updates and gather parent feedback.

Provide parents with opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities.

The Academy at Smith will encourage parents and families to attend school events, serve on committees, support classroom and extracurricular activities when appropriate, and observe classroom instruction in accordance with school procedures and scheduling guidelines. The school values parent involvement and believes that active family participation strengthens student achievement, school-community relationships, and overall student success. Parents are encouraged to fill out the link via GCS Volunteer in order to have their information in our school system. Information will also be shared out via Guilford Parent Link and updates to our school website.

Ensure regular two-way, meaningful communication between family members and school staff that is, to the extent practicable, in a language that family members can understand.

The Academy at Smith will ensure regular, two-way, and meaningful communication between family members and school staff through phone calls, newsletters, emails with translations as needed, and providing interpreters at conferences. Messages sent through a school messaging systems has a translation feature. Staff will work collaboratively with families to support student learning, address concerns, and encourage active participation in the educational process. All staff, parents, and students will receive weekly communication from the Principal via Guilford Parent Link.

Participate in parent-teacher conferences, curriculum and academic nights, Title I meetings, family engagement events (once per semester), volunteer opportunities, student performances and school club / organization events, School Improvement Team meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, workshops focused on student achievement and college/career readiness, and other school-sponsored activities designed to strengthen the partnership between home and school.
